Registration Open for CIMIT Innovation Congress 2008, Oct. 28-29

CIMIT has opened registration for its Innovation Congress 2008, which this year will explore “Forging Partnerships in Healthcare.”

The event will be held Oct. 28-29 at the Back Bay Events Center, 200 Berkeley St., Boston, the same venue that hosted the 2007 conference that drew a record attendance. Please check elsewhere on this website to learn how to register.

Two keynote speakers have been confirmed. One will be Stephen Oesterle, MD, senior vice president for medicine and technology at Medtronic, Inc. Dr. Oesterle was formerly associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of Invasive Cardiology Services at Massachusetts General Hospital. While in Boston, he was a principal at CIMIT. At Medtronic, he provides executive leadership for Medtronic scientific research, formation of technological strategies and development of strong cooperative relationships with the world’s medical communities.

Another keynote speaker will be Thomas J. Miller, CEO, Workflow and Solutions, Siemens Healthcare.

Invited to speak has been Elias A. Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health. He heads the federal government’s medical research agency and oversees the NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers with more than 17,000 employees.

Exploratorium is featured

A major attraction of the Congress is the CIMIT Exploratorium, an exciting environment at which researchers demonstrate their innovative devices and discuss their technology with attendees. As reported by the Boston Globe (on boston.com), “ . . . At the Exploratorium . . . The Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology offered a room full of displays hinting at the future of medicine as envisioned by its member hospitals and universities.”

Also featured will be an experimental laboratory called “The Power of Virtual Experience.” The exhibit introduces virtual learning through participation in “games” while help develop skills that could be used in a medical setting.

This year CIMIT is making an extra effort to encourage networking and peer discussion. Many of the top researchers and clinicians associated with CIMIT will make themselves available to meet and talk with attendees. The goal is to foster an interchange of ideas and scientific perspectives, offering the possibility that collaborations might ensue from such informal discussions.

“The Innovation Congress offers a great opportunity to meet people, learn about new technologies and discuss ideas to improve medicine,” said John Parrish, MD, executive director of CIMIT. “Each Congress in the past few years has exceeded the attendance of the previous year, and this year’s version is certain to appeal to professionals working for better health care.”

Focus sessions include examinations of subjects such as trauma and critical care, traumatic brain injury, neurotechnology, open innovation, microfluidics, cardiovascular devices, biomaterials, simulation, healthcare information technology and natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).
